A classic Indian dinner typically consists of a variety of dishes, often served family-style.

Main dishes can include vegetarian options like paneer butter masala, chana masala (chickpea curry), or aloo gobi (potato and cauliflower curry). For non-vegetarians, popular choices are chicken curry, butter chicken (murgh makhani), or lamb curry.

Indian dinners often feature a variety of side dishes, such as vegetable stir-fries (sabzi), lentil dishes (dal), or spinach-based curries (palak paneer). These provide additional flavors and textures to complement the main dishes.

Rice and bread are staples of Indian cuisine and are typically served alongside the main dishes. Basmati rice is commonly used, while bread options may include roti (whole wheat flatbread), naan (leavened flatbread), or paratha (layered flatbread).

Indian meals are often accompanied by condiments and accompaniments to enhance the flavors. This may include yogurt (raita) to cool down spicy dishes, pickles (achar) for added tanginess, papad (crispy lentil wafers), salad, and various chutneys (such as mint chutney or tamarind chutney).

A traditional Indian dinner might conclude with a sweet treat, such as rice pudding (kheer), gajar ka halwa, or barfi.

To accompany the meal, beverages like lassi (a yogurt-based drink), masala chai (spiced tea), or simply water are commonly served.

Tips for Cooking Indian Dinners

Making cooking easier and fun is all about having the right tools. I think gadgets play a very important role in today's busy lifestyle. Invest in a good food processor and a blender, they speed up the prep work and can save you a whole lot of time in the kitchen.

I always find using a pressure cooker or Instant Pot for quick weeknights dinner a time saver.

Keep common Indian spices like coriander powder, turmeric, red chili powder, amchur powder, and garam masala in your pantry. You don’t need spice mix for every dish you make. Simply use these basic Indian masalas and you are good to go.

For quicker prep, consider buying ready-made ginger garlic paste or making homemade paste ready to use. You can easily store homemade ginger-garlic paste for up to a month in the fridge. I usually make in bulk, and always have some in the refrigerator and freezer for later use.

I always have bhuna masala, a base gravy of onion, tomato, ginger, and garlic in large batches and freeze it. Honestly, with this homemade Indian curry sauce, making weeknight dinners is a breeze. It takes me hardly any time to cook dinner.

On days, when I just want a quick fix, I simply skip the onions altogether and just use tomatoes to make the curry. That means no chopping or browning onions is needed, which can easily save me 10-15 minutes.

I always cook extra Indian curry and freeze it for later use. It's so handy to have homemade meals ready on busy weeknights.

What to serve with Indian Dinner Recipes?
