What is Ganesh Chaturthi?
Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10 day festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, revered in Hindu mythology as the Lord of Wisdom. According to tradition, Lord Ganesha is worshipped before starting any ceremony or ritual, as he is also known as the Lord of Beginnings.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a major festival celebrated across India. For ten days, Ganesh idols are brought into homes and worshipped, accompanied by joyful chants of "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Mangal Murti Morya." The festivities are filled with vibrant dance and music, and no Indian festival is complete without an abundance of food and sweets.
In Southern India, this festival is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi. Lord Ganesh, revered by many names, including Vigna Harta (the remover of obstacles), is celebrated for guiding us through life's challenges. It's this role that gives the festival its name, Vinayaka Chaturthi.
Here, I’m sharing a selection of recipes for Ganesh Chaturthi, featuring both sweet and savory dishes. Sweets play a significant role in the festivities and are traditionally offered to Lord Ganesha as Prasad.
